The Reedsburg Thurber-Greenwood Post began in 1939 and is currently made up of 200 members who are very active within the community. The Color Guard can be seen participating in area parades, Relay for Life, Veteran's Day and Memorial Day events as well as programs at area schools throughout the year.
The Post members can be seen selling the famous Buddy Poppy as well as participating in other fund raising events. Monies generated by these events are used in a variety of ways to benefit the community and veterans. Some of their worthwhile projects include:
Local scholarships for students going on to higher education,
Food Pantry donations,
State VA Hospital donations,
VFW National Home for Children in Eaton Rapids, MI
Donations to the Bobby Nelson Christmas Fund which ensures every veteran in VA hospitals will receive a Christmas gift,
Emergency Disaster Fund,
Goodwill packages going to active military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan,
Sponsor boy to Badger State Boys Camp in Ripon, WI
In addition to donating money and goods, many of the veterans donate their time to school programs and presentations to other organizations such as the Cub Scouts. The Color Guard conducts a 21 gun salute ceremony at every veteran funeral. Their building is provided at no charge to the radio auction each year and they also provide awards to outstanding teachers every year.
