2012 Loyalty Day Celebrated in Reedsburg
Thurber Greenwood Post 1916 hosted State ceremony.

The State of Wisconsin Department of Veteran’s Affairs and the Wisconsin VFW selected the Thurber Greenwood VFW Post 1916 to host the State of Wisconsin 2012 Loyalty Day, in Reedsburg, on April 28th. “This was an extreme honor for Post 1916. The parade ended at our newly dedicated Veteran’s Memorial, and despite a rainy start, many patriotic citizens came out to celebrate with us,” says Post Commander Warren Frank. “The Committee’s motto was Stand United.”

The day’s festivities began with a parade, culminating at the Reedsburg Area Veteran’s Memorial. The parade will include units representing Veterans organizations and VFW Posts from around the state. In addition, area and statewide marching bands, war re-enactment groups and area businesses participated. The parade was followed by a short program with local and statewide dignitaries, and food/beverages at Nishan Park.

Explanation of Loyalty Day

Loyalty Day originally began as “Americanization” day in 1921, as a counter to the Communists’ May 1st celebration of the Russian Revolution. On May 1, 1930, 10,000 VFW members staged a rally at New York’s Union Square to promote patriotism. Through a resolution adopted in 1949, May 1st evolved into Loyalty Day. Observances began in 1950 on April 8th and climaxed on May 1st when more than five million people across the nation held rallies. In New York City, more than 100,000 people rallied for America. In 1958, Congress enacted Public Law 529 proclaiming Loyalty Day a permanent fixture on the nation’s calendar.

The purpose of Loyalty Day is to demonstrate our patriotism and support for our unique tradition of freedom. Showing our pride in America can be done on more than just Loyalty Day or the 4th of July…
we can demonstrate our loyalty throughout the year by helping our country be the best that it can be.

We are proud of our Country and we are proud to be Americans!
